#CMRN Character Profile: Garrett Albanese
Name/Nickname/Pronouns: Garrett Michael Albanese, he/him (he goes by Garrett but will definitely accept “Garr,” especially when meant with affection)
Magical Being Type: Shifter, born; specifically avian-type, specifically barn owl
Age turned in 2019: 25
Gender/Sexuality: Cis male, gay
Profession: Hospital receptionist and emergency dispatcher; he majored in biology and has toyed with studying to become a nurse, but so far he’s fairly content doing lower-pressure work
Family: Parents Oliver and Kenna Albanese; siblings Matthew (28), Marianna (25), Nathaniel (20/21), Katalin (17), Pia, Adele, Oralie (14, triplets), and Rose (7/8). Probably aunts and uncles and cousins galore, too. They live in the suburbs of whatever the equivalent of, like, Hartford or Albany or someplace smallish but more urban than Hexham would be, in Walnut, close enough to visit frequently but far enough that it’s not worth day-tripping except in case of emergencies. He misses them very much but also appreciates the independence just a little?
Important Relationships to Other Characters: He’s roommates with Almatai and good friends/work buddies with Ziv; he’s also at least acquaintances with everyone in the building who wouldn’t have a reason to not be friends with him (e.g., people who are particular loners), and gets along well with the people who run the businesses in town that he frequents.
Other Relevant Character Notes: He has a motorcycle! It’s the most (and only) badass thing about him, by a super long shot.
Rough Timeline of Their Story: Starts in fall 2018, ends nearly a year later, in late summer 2019.
Appearance: Garrett has light brown skin, curly black hair that he usually keeps cut pretty short (it has a tendency to get shaggy if he’s feeling lazy and lets it grow out), and large, dark eyes that make sad pathetic puppy-dog faces extremely effective. Good-looking in a cute rather than sexy direction, he’s right around average height at 5’9” and though he’s in fairly good shape given his frequent nocturnal adventures (that’s not a euphemism, he’s a goddamn owl), his body type is best described as “cuddly.” He dresses well, but somehow always manages to look at least a little disheveled; he would like to be the type of person who could pull off Rad Tattoos or a Cool Earring of some sort, but his entire vibe is, rather disappointingly, much too wholesome for that. Basically, he’s a Good Small-Town Boy and he very much looks the part. (FC: Elyes Gabel)
Personality: Garrett pretty much has two settings: cheerful delight or crushing, overdramatic overreaction. For the most part he’s fairly chill, as people go: optimistic, light-hearted, extremely friendly and caring. But he tends to invest himself very deeply in things, and if they happen to go wrong, he takes it rather hard. Despite said overemotionality, though, he hates it when people make a fuss over him, so he knows that overreacting when things go wrong in a minor way make it more likely that they won’t take it as seriously when things go really wrong. He likes attention, but not worry.
Growing up in a big, affectionate, close family has given Garrett many things, both good and bad: an inability to stay out of anyone’s business, difficulty showing affection in ways that don’t involve hugs/cuddles, gentle mocking, or ridiculous nicknames, the ability to love in a ferocious, wholehearted, ride-or-die manner, an endless supply of entertaining stories for every occasion, deep and intense protectiveness (he’s the third oldest of nine) coupled with a love of being taken care of (his two older siblings are REALLY Mom Friend-y), a high degree of extroversion and love of company coupled with being fiercely territorial of his personal space and alone time, rare as that may be.
Again, he’s a Good Small-Town Boy; despite his slightly overbearing cheer and tendency for melodrama over his setbacks, he’s a very decent guy with a big, warm heart and an even bigger personality. Most people are probably fond of him, however begrudgingly.
Life: Garrett grew up in the suburbs of a small city, close enough to go on Downtown Adventures but far enough that everyone in their small neighborhood knew one another (especially as most of them were shifters). He grew up among a gaggle of people nearly all the time, between siblings and cousins and friends, an idyllic childhood followed by a pretty awesome teenhood. His family’s barn own lineage goes back longer than nearly any other, so while they’re a modern family, they still keep a lot of traditions: low-key religion, large and deeply close families, mating for life. Still, it was accepted that the kids would, when they grew, move elsewhere to start their lives. Matthew, the eldest, married a fellow avian shifter just out of college and moved to the suburbs of the capital of Allium (he has since had two kids); Marianna, the second oldest, moved across the country to Alder on her own, which was slightly less okay and the entire family misses her terribly.
Garrett, meanwhile, went to college in Walnut’s second biggest city and proceeded to enjoy himself profoundly; he stayed in close touch with his family, of course, especially once he started dating. Again, given that his species mates for life, it’s a tricky process for them, as they’re inclined to deep emotional attachment, something that is very much not universal across species. So his first serious boyfriend, a human whom he dated for the last year and a half of college and planned to live with in the city post-graduation, essentially ghosted him under the pressure of a marriage-and-kids grade commitment at such a young age, breaking Garrett’s heart and convincing him to swear off of dating humans again.
This, obviously, also somewhat changed his plans for the future; he couldn’t bear to stay in the city without the rest of the future he’d planned, so he attempted to choose the most opposite place he could for his new home. Enter Hexham! Garrett knew within the first day of arriving that he’d found the right place; he loved the building at 5 Hawthorne Street, he loved the quiet bustle of the town, and he even loved his weird and mysterious and highly reserved new roommate, a vampire about whom he still knows next to nothing but likes a whole lot anyway. He soon got a job at the local hospital, made friends with a few coworkers, and began to scope out his favorite places in town to develop a few regular hangouts. And despite his new resolve to never again put himself through the heartbreak of dating a human again, within his first couple months in Hexham, the cute human student working a year-long fellowship at the local nautical museum was beginning to catch his eye.
Well… you can probably guess where this is going. It took him a while to gather up the resolve to do anything about it, but once things started happening, they went so well that Garrett felt confident he’d made the right decision. And then he introduced the guy to his family less than a year in, and they started talking about marriage and children and the future, and… once again, things ended badly, dude left town, and Garrett was totally devastated. This time, though, he didn’t associate Hexham with that heartbreak so strongly, because it had felt like home to him before everything went to shit, so he wasn’t going anywhere. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he eventually got back on his feet, and this time he was certain: he would really, really not ever date another human again. For real this time.
Really.
